I have developed a new medical abbreviation recently. It is PPN (Piss Poor Nursing). This abbreviation is acceptable and describes quite a few nurses. I am thankful not to fall in this category. The acceptable candidates for this category include but are not limited to the following:
1.They were too busy to do the dressing changes
2.They didn't have enough time to restart the IV the patient just happened to pull out at the last minute (even though the patient or family will tell you its been out all day)
3.They haven't given any medications all day including the much needed antibiotics
4.Your patient tells you he hasn't seen his nurse but once today
5.You have orders on your chart which have not been carried out yet (probably written much earlier in the day)
6.Your IV fluids are bone dry!
7. You have to give blood which should have been started hours earlier!
The list goes on and on!
Now for those of you who aren't in the nursing field and are reading this, fortunately there aren't alot of these nursing out there but they do exist. Most of us work hard to make sure we do our jobs but it is these kind of nurses that cause the "I have to write down everything they do and give" attitudes from family members.
Have any similar stories or labels you have for your field of work you would like to share? All comments are greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!

well being a mentor of a first years class in highschool, makes you realise how many teachers are not doing what they are supposed to do!
ReplyDeleteI teach my 25 hours a week ( thats fulltime ) but im never realy done, there are always tests to grade or lessons to prepare!
Most of my time goes into helping my students! The kids i teach, are kids who mostly have 'special' home situations. Im not even going into that, but i will tell you that takes a lot of your heart and mind to handle sometimes.
At our school teachers are allowed to send a kid to a 'punishment classroom'. I only send a kid out when he is causing trouble, that results in other kids not being able to learn!
But a lot of my collegues send them out when they didnt make their homework, or when they forgot a book.
The thing that costs me the most energy is when a kid is sent out after a discussion with a teacher. a lot of the times the kid doesnt even know why he got send out. I think its the teachers job to make it realy clear why you dont want that kid to be in your classroom at that time.
So every time i talk to them and ask them what they were doing and what they were supposed to do. Most of the times the kids come to realise that they were not going by the rules or that they were not doing what they were supposed to do. But sometimes its realy hard to narrow down what it was that got them sent out.
Of course i always have to back up my collegues, cause we are as weak as the weakest link. But its not always easy!
I have a realy big heart for these kids as most of them already have a realy hard time and its realy hard to see collegues not putting in any effort to try to get along with a kid.
I know its hard and it takes time but it can be done!
So i go and talk to these collegues without disrepecting them. Sometimes i even feel like i should shut up, since im only 24 and they have been teaching for so many years. luckely most of them respond in a positive way and they will do more to make the kids understand. But there are always those who just dont care and just want to teach.
Its a shame!
